COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – After getting a grant from the State of Michigan, Ovid Township is helping the Branch County Sheriff’s Department purchase a new boat for the Marine Patrol.
Sheriff Fred Blankenship told the Branch County Board of Commissioners during their work session on Thursday that Ovid Township will give $60,000 from the Environment, Great Lakes and Energy Department to purchase the boat.
The funds were awarded through EGLE’s Renewables Ready Communities Award grant program. Ovid Township included the Sheriff’s Department in their grant application.
An agreement stipulating the grant process between the township, the Sheriff’s Department and the Commissioners was brought forward for formal action during next Tuesday’s Commissioners meeting.
Blankenship estimated this will save the Sheriff’s Office and the County between $45,000 and $50,000 in the 2025 Marine Patrol budget.
