PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – A call for a welfare check at the Pennfield Township Taco Bell Thursday night quickly escalated into a multi-county police pursuit.
Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the restaurant on NE Capital Avenue at approximately 7:28 p.m. to find a 47-year-old male unresponsive in the driver’s seat of a vehicle.
After being medically cleared by Lifecare Ambulance and Pennfield Township Fire Department personnel, deputies discovered the man had an active felony arrest warrant. A struggle ensued as they attempted to take him into custody, during which the suspect struck and injured a deputy with his vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The injured deputy was later treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released.
A short time later, deputies located the suspect’s vehicle and initiated a traffic stop, but the driver fled again, leading law enforcement on a pursuit that extended into Eaton County.
With the assistance of the Michigan State Police and the Potterville Police Department, officers successfully deployed tire deflation devices, bringing the chase to an end.
The suspect was then taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Calhoun County Jail, where he faces multiple felony charges.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Lieutenant Benjamin Hess or provide an anonymous tip through Silent Observer.
