COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced that the first of its two annual Free Fishing Weekends for 2026 will take place this Saturday, Feb. 14, and Sunday, Feb. 15.
During this winter event, both residents and out-of-state visitors can fish all species in both inland and Great Lakes waters without purchasing a license.
Additionally, the state is waiving the Recreation Passport fee, granting free vehicle entry to all 103 state parks and more than 1,000 DNR-managed boating access sites.
While license fees are suspended, all other fishing regulations, including size and daily bag limits, remain in full effect. Anglers planning to head onto the ice are urged by the DNR to exercise extreme caution and consult the official ice safety guidelines due to varying conditions across the state.
For those who miss the winter event, the summer 2026 Free Fishing Weekend is already scheduled for June 13–14, which will also coincide with a “Three Free” weekend featuring free ORV trail access and park entry.
