  • World Cup Song

    Posted by Ken Delaney

Somalian-born, Canadian-based hip-hop artist K'Naan has spoken about the "unity and celebration" that will connect with his song "Wavin' Flag," after it was chosen as the official anthem of Coca-Cola's 2010 FIFA World Cup program. K'Naan has specially recorded a version of the song for the tournament, hosted by South Africa. The remix of "Wavin' Flag" is part of Coca-Cola's global integrated marketing campaign "inspired by the joyous dance celebrations familiar to Africa."

The track will be used as the music element throughout the entire campaign, including as the soundtrack for all television commercials, during the trophy tour.

  • Teaching Our Kids About Money

    Posted by Ken Delaney

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in Linda Chan's Advanced Placement classes were among the kids in the district who have been learning about Financial Literacy, with the help from Southern Michigan Bank and Trust.  As an end of year project, those students had to select a charity, talk about how it is funded, and make a contribution to that group from their "checkbook". A number of them made their final presentations at SMB&T's Conference Center last week.

  • The Charity Event That Keeps Quacking Along

    Posted by Ken Delaney

17 years is an awful long time for a local charity event to keep growing, but that's what's happening with the Great Hospice Duck Race.  I have to admit that around 18 years ago when Pete Barone brought me the idea of racing plastics ducks down the Sauk River and actually making money I was skeptical.  Over these past 17 years though, thousands has been raised for Hospice programs.  What a great tribute to our community!

I do miss the competitive Ducknitary Race (we used to throw our own ducks into the water), but it does bring out more people.  Branch County Commissioner John Houtz won the race (he said his duck had been in training), while Circuit Judge Bill O'Grady came in dead last.
