St. Cloud, MN (WKZO) – Justin Kovacs had three points and scored the only goal in the shootout to help the Broncos upset the third-ranked St. Cloud State Huskies in a shootout after the two teams tied 5-5 in regulation and overtime.
St. Cloud started the game on fire, scoring three goals on just four shots against Broncos’ goalie Frank Slubowski, who was pulled after allowing the third goal in favor of Lukas Hafner. Hafner was stellar from then on stopping 16 of 18 shots including all three shots in the shootout.
After the Huskies increased their lead to 4-1 5:33 into the second period, the Broncos rallied with three unanswered goals from Mike Cichy, Shane Berschbach and Chase Bailsey to tie the game at four after two periods.
The Huskies regained the lead on a power play goal 7:37 into the third but Bailsey’s second goal of the game tied the game at five and forced the extra time.
Kenny Morrison had three assists. St Cloud State went 3 for 5 on the power-play while the Broncos were 2 for 4.
The Broncos will look to make it six consecutive games without a loss on Saturday night in the second half of their weekend series with the Huskies. Puck drops at 7:30.
