Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO) – A night after blowing a two goal lead the Western Michigan University hockey team once again blew an early two goal lead but was able to salvage a 2-2 tie in the final game of their weekend series against Northern Michigan University. The Broncos did win the shootout 1-0 but the official record book will only credit the Broncos with a tie since it was a nonconference game.
The Broncos (3-3-2) scored both their goals on the power play with the first coming from Nolan LaPorte 7:14 into the opening period and then from Shane Berschbach at the 7:13 mark of the second. For Berschbach it was his fourth goal of the year, matching his total from last year.
Northern Michigan finally got on the board with 1:21 left in the second and then got the equalizer with less than three minutes to go in the game.
During the shootout Kyle Novak tallied the only goal in the second round, while Frank Slubowski stopped all three NMU attempts. Slubowski made 25 saves for the game. NMU goalie Mathias Dahlstrom made 26 saves.
The Broncos return to conference play next weekend as they travel to Denver for two games starting on Friday night at 9:37pm.
