Oxford, OH (WKZO) –The Western Michigan men’s basketball team improved to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play, escaping John D. Millett Hall with a 78-77 overtime victory against the Miami (OH) RedHawks.
David Brown scored a game high 25 points, including the last four points for the Broncos (9-5) in overtime, all from the free throw line, to secure Western’s fourth win in a row and fourth in a row over the RedHawks. Brown reached the 20 point plateau for the sixth time this season, while improving his MAC high points per game average to 18.8.
The Broncos led nearly the entire game, with their largest coming at 28-14 with 6:05 left in the opening frame. WMU entered halftime up 35-26 and shot over 70% during the first 20 minutes.
Miami finally took their first lead 58-56 with 4:57 left in the game on a Will Felder three pointer. The two teams traded the lead five more times before Willie Moore’s driving layup tied the game 65 with 2.6 seconds left, forcing overtime.
In the extra frame, Connar Tava scored five of his 22 points for his first ever back-to-back 20 point performances, after recording a career high 25 in the Broncos’ MAC opener on Wednesday against Toledo. Tava made seven straight shots to add on to the nine in a row he made against Toledo before his streak of 16 consecutive field goal makes came to an end after he missed a layup in overtime. The sophomore was a perfect 8 for 8 from the free throw line and the Broncos as team made all but three of their 25 attempts.
GAME NOTES: Shayne Whittington was the only other Bronco to finish in double figures with 12…This was the Broncos first overtime game of the year. They went 2-1 in OT last season…The Bronco shot 56.1% from the field…Bill Edwards topped the scoring charts for the RedHawks with 24 off the bench. .. The Broncos hold a one game lead in the MAC West over its next opponent Eastern Michigan. The two Michigan Directional Schools will tip-off in Ypsilanti on Tuesday at 7pm.
