Broncos storm back in second half, win MAC Regular Season Title with 78-64 win over CMU

by Colin Windecker

Mt. Pleasant, MI (WKZO) – For the first time since 2004, the Western Michigan men’s basketball team can call themselves Mid-American Conference regular season champs after defeating the Central Michigan Chippewas 78-64 on Friday night.

David Brown led the way for the Broncos with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting while all four remaining starters finished in double-figures as well, as WMU will enter the MAC Tourney next week as the #1 seed and will at least share the MAC Regular Season title.

The Broncos trailed 38-33 but a 30-9 run, including 15 in a row in the second half, propelled WMU into the lead and they never looked back.

WMU shot 68.9% from the field and an incredible 81% in the second half to outscore the Chips by 19 in the second half.

The Broncos next game will be on Friday night in Cleveland but their opponent is still to be determined.

With the win, the Broncos also won the Michigan MAC Trophy for the sixth time in the eight year existence of the trophy. The Broncos have also clinched a spot in the National Invitational Tournament if they come up short for a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
