David Brown scores 26, Broncos get tough road win against NIU 74-71

by Colin Windecker

DeKalb, IL (WKZO) – The Western Michigan University men’s basketball team held off a late charge from the Northern Illinois Huskies and held on to win 74-71 on Sunday afternoon in Mid-American Conference action.

MAC leading scorer David Brown didn’t miss a shot in the first half and it wasn’t until his 10th attempt before he missed, as he finished with a game high 26 points. Brown ended the game missing his final shots and missed the back off of a one-and-one that would have put the Broncos up four with 14 seconds left.

However, a missed three by Travon Baker and a failed half-court shot as time expired sealed the deal for the Broncos, who move back into a three-way tie with Buffalo and Ohio for the third best record in the MAC.  The Broncos (14-8, 7-3 MAC) remain a game behind Toledo, who beat Ball State on Saturday, for the MAC West lead.

Shayne Whittington contributed 15 points and eight rebounds while Connar Tava chipped in 12 and seven rebounds.

The Broncos lead 37-33 at halftime and were up by 16 at 63-47 after Kellen McCormick drilled a three pointer. NIU cut the lead to two twice, but could never get any closer.

Game Notes: The Broncos shot 52.8% from the field (28-53)…Austin Richie had eight points and Tucker Haymond and McCormick each had five…WMU outrebounded NIU 37-27…The Broncos return to the court on Wednesday Feb 12th at home against Akron (16-7, 8-2 MAC). Tip-off is set for 7pm from University Arena.
