East Lansing, MI (WKZO) – In just his second career start, Lukas Hafner recorded his first ever shutout as the Western Michigan University hockey team defeated the Michigan State Spartans 2-0 on Friday night. The Broncos had been winless in their last four games.
Hafner was given another start in place of the struggling Frank Slubowski and stopped all 22 shots the Spartans fired on him.
After a scoreless first period, the Broncos took the lead 13:07 into the second as Nolan LaPorte tallied his fourth goal of the year. Josh Pitt and Colton Hargrove assisted on the goal.
WMU doubled its lead to 2-0 after Justin Kovacs riffled home a shot passed Spartan goalie Jake Hildebrand. Hargrove and Chase Bailsey recorded assists on Kovacs fourth goal of the year.
Both teams failed to score on the power play.
The two former CCHA rivals will finish up their home and home series at Lawson Arena on Saturday night.
