Foxboro, MA (WKZO) – After eight straight losses to start his coaching career, P.J. Fleck finally has his first win after the Western Michigan Broncos defeated the UMass Minutemen 31-30.
Broncos’ wide receiver Corey Davis capped off a career day by hauling in a 54 yard TD reception from Zach Terrell with 4:55 left to put the Broncos up 31-24. However, UMass scored with 22 seconds left, but instead of kicking the extra point to tie the game, instead attempted an unsuccessful two-point conversion, as WMU avoided its first nine game losing streak to start a season since 1996.
Making his third start of the season, Zach Terrell had four touchdown passes on 23 of 36 passing for 275 yards. Two of those touchdowns went to Davis, who had a career high 154 yards receiving and 10 receptions.
WMU trailed at halftime 21-17 was down 14-3 early in the second quarter. Brian Fields had 65 yards rushing on 18 carries.
