WMU Basketball picked to finish 2nd in West, Whittington named to All-MAC West Preseason 1st Team

by Colin Windecker

On Tuesday, the Mid-American Conference announced the results of its preseason media poll, with the Western Michigan Broncos predicted to finish second in the MAC West division for the 2013-2014 season.  The Broncos are coming off a 22-13 season, the third-highest single-season win total in program history, in which they won their sixth MAC West division title in 10 seasons under Coach Hawkins.

The Broncos received 108 votes in the preseason media poll, trailing only Toledo’s 149 votes for the division lead. Toledo had an identical 10-6 MAC record last season, but lost the tiebreaker with WMU based on the two team’s head-to-head matchups.

A lot of the Broncos success last year can be accredited to one person, Shayne Whittington. Whittington is the only Bronco to be named to the Preseason West Division All-MAC Team and was named to the Second Team All-MAC last season after averaging 13.2 points and 8.8 rebounds, while setting a new program record for blocked shots in a season with 58. The 6'11 Paw Paw native also led the MAC in double-doubles with 12.

The Broncos will begin the 2013-14 season with a pair of home exhibition games, starting at home against Kalamazoo College on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m.  They will host Aquinas College on Monday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. to wrap the exhibition season.  The regular season will begin the next weekend, when the Broncos compete in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic, hosted by Hawaii.
