Toledo, OH (WKZO) – David Fluellen scored four touchdowns and fell just eight yards short of his career high as the Toledo Rockets pounded the Broncos 47-20 on Saturday afternoon at the Glass Bowl.
The Mid-American Conference’s leading rusher had 220 yards on the ground for his fifth straight game of 100 yards or more rushing. Fluellen didn’t take the field in the fourth quarter and left the game in the third after scoring his career-high fourth TD from two yards out, putting the Rockets up 47-7.
The struggles for Broncos’ quarterback Tyler Van Tubbergen continued as the fifth-year senior was just 9 for 19 with a touchdown, an interception and fumbled resulting in a touchdown for the Toledo. After the fumble, VanTubbergen was replaced on the next drive by Zach Terrell.
After a shaky start in which in his first pass was picked off, Terrell settled down and completed 10 of the next 12 for 184 yards and led drives that resulted in 13 fourth quarter points.
Dareyon Chance tallied the final touchdown from a yard out, capping off a 96 yard drive, and led the Broncos in rushing with 80 yards on 25 carries. Corey Davis had five receptions for 77 yards in his first game back after missing the previous game. Eric Boyden scored the first touchdown for WMU, a 16 yard reception from VanTubbergen with 1:01 left in the half, cutting the lead to 23-7.
With the loss the Broncos fall to 0-6 for the first time since the 1996 team started 0-9.
Game Notes: Toledo outgained WMU 528-375….Rockets starting QB Terrance Owens was 14 for 25 for 149 yards and a touchdown…Andrew Haldeman connected on field goal attempts or 19 and 35 yards in the fourth quarter...The Broncos return home to Waldo Stadium next Saturday for Homecoming, as they welcome the Ball State Cardinals. Kick-off is set for 2pm.
