Relay for Life organizers say "Thanks"

by Ken Delaney

Here's a big thank you to the Branch County community from Relay for Life Chair Cheryl Back:

As chair of this year’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life committee, I would like to thank the residents of Branch County for their generosity and support. We had 42 teams participate in this year’s event, on June 22nd & 23rd. We raised more than $109,000 to help the Society’s fight against this disease. This outstanding show of support proves that the people of Branch County stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the American Cancer Society to achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures, and fighting back.

We were honored to be joined by 149 cancer survivors who walked the opening Survivors Lap, officially kicking off this year’s event. These survivors are the reason we continue the fight. Their participation symbolizes hope for those currently battling cancer. We were excited to see 139 members of our community step forward and make the extra commitment in fighting cancer by volunteering to participate in the Cancer Prevention Study-3 that Branch County was chosen to hold. Without these volunteers we could not determine the causes of some cancers and how to prevent them.

A special thanks to the many Relay For Life volunteers who worked to make this event a success – celebrating the lives of those who have battled cancer, remembering loved ones lost, and pledging to fight back against the disease. The Relay For Life committee did an outstanding job of planning the event and demonstrating leadership in the fight against cancer in our community.

We are so grateful for the support of area businesses and individuals who donated supplies, food and services to this year’s event. We want to thank those who helped provide a wonderful meal for our Survivors:
