LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Governor Snyder has signed legislation authored by GOP lawmaker Eric Leutheuser, Branch County’s Representative in the State House. The measure expands the scope of private or non-profit services that townships can contract with. The Hillsdale-based organization Domestic Harmony, which works with families affected by domestic violence, helped provide the inspiration for House Bill 4563. Leutheuser said he’s pleased for organizations like Domestic Harmony that the Senate and Governor Snyder joined the House with unanimous and timely support. While noting that domestic violence is a problem throughout the state, Leutheuser added that he hopes the legislation will help make sure that anyone and everyone can get the necessary assistance and support when faced with this problem. Among the approved services that domestic violence assistance organizations can provide when contracted with a township is an emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis hotline, counseling, coordination of supportive services and legal advocacy.
Gov. Snyder’s signature last week follows a rapid advancement to his desk, following approval by the Senate Local Government committee on Dec. 15 and passed by a 38-0 vote in the Senate. The bill was also strongly supported in the state House, passing by a 103-0 vote in mid-September.
