Broncos Wrap Up First Scrimmage
KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO) – After a week and a half of practice, the Western Michigan Football held the first of two scrimmages in preparation for the September 3rd season opener at Michigan.
During the hour long scrimmage, the first team saw minimal action as the 2nd and 3rd teams dominated snaps on the field.
A breakdown of the offence by position from today’s scrimmage:
*Quarterback: Alex Carder went 4 of 5 for 145 yards, 97 yards off a screen pass to Jordan White. Tyler VanTubbergen showed off his mobility but not his accuracy, connecting only 10 of 21. Mike Perish took snaps with the 3rd team and had a 20 yard touchdown run.
*Running Back: Tevin Drake all but wrapped up the #1 back spot as Brian Fields lost fumble may have cost him a shot. Drake had 40 yards on 8 carries and showed power and speed, breaking tackles and bouncing off defenders, on a 10 yard touchdown run. Michael Johnson had 27 yards on 7 carries.
*Wide Receivers: Jordan White had only one reception but made it count. From the offenses 1 yard line, Carder hit White with a quick screen pass, after breaking away from corner Aaron Winchester, White was finally chased down at the opposing 3 yard line by Lewis Toler. Caleb Ravenell had back to back catches on his way to 29 yards and Portage native Eric “Money” Monette continued to show improvement hauling in 2 passes for 34 yards.
*Offensive Line: The injury bug continues to plague the offensive line. Greg Peterson sprained his left ankle earlier this week and now starting center Kevin Galeher cracked a bone in his foot and could miss significant time. Starting right guard Terry Davisson has moved to center to help fill the void left by Galeher. 2 junior college transfers took over at both guard positions with Kasimili Uitalia and Deon Cammock getting snaps.
