Toledo, OH (WKZO) – A strong start to the 2nd half put the Toledo Rockets up 12 points, and despite a late run which closed the Broncos gap to 1, the Western Michigan men’s basketball team was unable to overcome the deficit, as they were defeated Saturday night by the Rockets 83-74.
Flenard Whitfield topped the scoring charts for the Broncos with 15 points and 8 rebounds and Matt Stainbrook added 14.
WMU trailed by only 3 points at halftime, but the Rockets came out of the break on fire, scoring 15 of the first 21 points in the 2nd half to extend their lead to 12. The Broncos responded cutting the lead to 1 with 3:46 left after Demetrius Ward drilled a 3 pointer.
Ward and Mike Douglas were the only other Broncos to finish in double figures as they each had 10 points. With the loss the Broncos fall to 12-17 and 6-8 in MAC play. WMU continues to hold down the 7 seed, if the MAC tournament were to start today.
WMU returns to action on Wednesday for Senior Night against Eastern Michigan. Tip-off is set for 7pm at University Arena.
GAME NOTES: Whitfield led the Broncos in assists with 6…Five rockets scored in double figures, with Dominique Buckley leading the pack with 16…WMU outshot the Rockets 49.2% to 48.4%...The Broncos also outrebounded Toledo 33-30… Brandon Pokley had 8 points for Western off the bench…The win was Toledo’s 4th in a row…Western falls to 2-11 in road contests.
