Gannett, known best for its newspapers, is splitting them away from its broadcast properties. Both Journal and Tribune recently did the same. It's clear that the newspaper divisions have become liabilities to these companies. The effort to convert the print product to a profitable digital product simply isn't working.
That said, the major newspapers for most of these companies were often drivers of content for the other divisions. It'll be interesting to see if some time of relationship between the two continue.
