(Allegan, MI - WHTC News) - What the voters said in Allegan County more than a fortnight ago wasn’t the last word on the matter.
Despite a rejection by 58 percent of the electorate in the August 3rd primary election, a proposal to raise property taxes across the county to fund a new county jail and sheriff’s headquarters will be back on the ballot for the November 2nd general election. The measure calls for property owners to pay nearly four tenths of a mill over a 20-year period, and placing it on the ballot passed by just one vote during yesterday’s board meeting.
The board is expected to approve a new design for the facility next Thursday.
