(Lansing, MI) -- Over the last quarter-century, Michigan School Superintendent Mike Flanagan says the state has saved around one-point-15 billion dollars by investing in preschool programs. A new report from Wilder Research showed the savings came from those children who took part in the programs being less likely to repeat grades and need more academic attention. They also were less likely to end up in the juvenile justice system or in prison as adults. Flanagan said the state spends about a billion dollars per grade, but lawmakers have made the preschool program discretionary which allows school districts to take money away from the programs for other needs.
