CHICAGO (WKZO) -- Five Great Lakes area states have once again sued to force Illinois to block the Asian Carp’s only path to the Great Lakes. This time they have targeted the Obama Administration and the City of Chicago’s water reclamation district. Michigan Attorney General Spokesperson Joy Yearout says the defendants have failed in their attempts to keep the voracious fish out of the Great Lakes. Yearout says a transportation expert refutes claims by Chicago officials that their economy would be devastated by closing the locks.
The lawsuit calls for the immediate closure of the locks on the Shipping canal, and for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to work on a permanent separation of the Great Lakes from the Mississippi River. Michigan is joined in the suit by Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. U.S. Supreme Court has already declined twice to intervene in a separate lawsuit filed by Great Lakes states and Ontario.
