COLDWATER (WTVB) - A possible dispute brewing between the City of Coldwater and a local chapter of the Tea Party has been settled for now. The disagreement arose over the group’s placement of a sign in the four corners park downtown announcing its event for tomorrow afternoon, Branch County Tea Party Six, The Value of the Vote.

The Thomas More Law Center, a national, public interest law firm based in Ann Arbor, was contacted by the group last week. Without giving any specific explanation other than the City had received some complaints, the City Manager, according to the Law Center, informed the Tea Party that it could no longer put up their signs.

The Law Center’s Senior Trial Counsel immediately prepared and faxed a letter to the City explaining it had violated the group’s Constitutional right to free speech. Within a few hours of receiving the letter, they say the City reversed its refusal. The situation has not been permanently resolved. That’s because the City’s attorney, again according to the Law Center, said that the city is developing a formal written policy dealing with displays in City parks.
