COLDWATER (WTVB) - In high school sports yesterday, in volleyball, Coldwater swept to victory at Battle Creek Central, winning in 3-games over the Bearcats, 25-11, 25-15, 25-12. Lindsey Adams led the Lady Cardinals in their league opener with 11 kills and 3 blocks along with 5 aces. BreeAnn Spangler and Kenzie Zinn had 10 kills apiece. Ashley Burkhardt had team-highs in assists with 31 and aces with 7. Coldwater improved its overall record to 24-and-5.

The Lady Cardinals won the junior varsity match in two games. Individual leaders for Coldwater were Meghan Schorfhaar with 6 aces and 4 assists, Danni Wachowicz with 3 digs, and Morgan Klein and Makayla Bendele with 2 kills apiece. The j-v team improved to 8-and-0. And the Lady Cardinals also won the freshman match in two games. Jessica Becks had 9 aces. MacKenzie Galloway and Jordan Shiery had 3 kills apiece and Kaitlyn Vella had 7 assists. The freshman team is now 11-and-2.

Also in volleyball, Bronson was a winner in three games at White Pigeon, 25-13, 25-16, 25-17.

In boy’s tennis, Coldwater stayed undefeated on the season with a 6-to-2 victory at home over Marshall. Racking up wins for the Cardinals were Nick Waterbury at first singles, Tyler Harrell at second singles, and Jacob Fielding at fourth singles along with Brad Babjack and Ryan Blanchard at first doubles, Jeff Werkman and Juan Hernandez at third doubles, and Alex Mason and Jordan Mock at fourth doubles. Coldwater improved to 6-and-0 overall and 2-and-0 In the SMAC East.

In the j-v match, the Cardinals beat the Redhawks 4-to-2. Winning for Coldwater were Josh Brock at second singles and Dylan Linklater at third singles along with Mike Beck and Nate Withington at first doubles and Alex Cornell and Allen Oeung at third doubles.

In girl’s golf, Coldwater had a second place finish in a SMAC East jamboree at Cedar Creek hosted by Battle Creek Lakeview. The Lady Cardinals had a team score of 179 with Lakeview winning the match at 171. Coldwater’ Amanda Sawdey was co-medalist with a 40, followed closely by Becky Olds with a 41.

And in cross country, Coldwater and Quincy competed yesterday at the Springport Invitational. In the Division One boy’s standings, Coldwater took eighth place while for the girl’s, the Lady Cardinals finished fifth.

In Division Three, the Quincy boys team was eighth out of ten full teams while the Lady Orioles finished in fifth place. Riley Horn won a medal for Quincy with his 18th place finish. Winning medals for the Quincy girls were Alyssa Bracy in eighth place and Megan Karney in 27th place. It was Bracy’s first high school race. Horn is also a freshman.

On today’s high school schedule, there’s reserve football with Coldwater’s junior varsity and freshman teams at home against Sturgis. Also in j-v action, Quincy hosts Concord, Bronson hosts Edwardsburg, and it’s Union City at Homer.

In boy’s soccer, Coldwater is at Battle Creek Lakeview while Quincy is at Lenawee Christian. In volleyball, Coldwater is at Parma Western. And in boy’s tennis, it’s Coldwater at Battle Creek Central.
