Lion’s coach Jim Schwartz hinted Wednesday that running back Kevin Smith, who is recovering from major knee surgery, might not be active for Detroit’s season opener Sunday at Chicago. That means speedy rookie Jahvid Best is in line to get the majority of the work against the Bears. The Lions are looking for Smith to show he’s closer to full speed before giving him more playing time.
The Lions have their work cut out for them in trying to show improvement over last year, considering this season’s schedule is ranked the 12th toughest in the league, despite Detroit having only won two games last season.
The curtain rises on the 2010 NFL season with the traditional Thursday night opener. Tonight’s matchup features a rematch of last year's NFC Championship Game between the Vikings and Saints at the Superdome. New Orleans beat Minnesota 31-28 in overtime en route to its first Super Bowl appearance and championship.
