DETROIT (WKZO) -- Consumers Energy crews completed their repairs in Kalamazoo County yesterday after Tuesday’s wind storms and all but a few remain without power this morning in Kent County, which was hit the hardest by the high winds, which took down branches and took down wires. At the peak, 113-thousand homeowners and businesses lost their power across the state.
Detroit Mayor Dave Bing was attending the red carpet opening of a new TV Show, “Detroit 187”, while parts of the city were burning Tuesday night, and now he is defending the city from criticism that it was not up to the task of protecting its citizens. Some residents waited as much as an hour for the trucks to arrive as they watched entire city blocks burn. Capt. Steve Varnas says they had every rig and every firefighter available on their depleted staff, fighting fires that night. Eighty-five homes were destroyed in a 6 hour period that Bing called a “natural disaster” caused by high winds that knocked over power lines and then fanned the sparks into firestorms.
A new study of the country's 50 largest metro areas ranks Detroit as the most stressful place to live and work. According to the analysis conducted by Portfolio.com, Detroit tops the list because of its high unemployment rate and high percentage of families living in poverty. Other factors include high numbers of both murders and robberies as well as a lack of sunshine. Today you could probably add the fear of fire.
