Jeremy Bonderman outwitted the White Sox for eight innings and Alex Avila hit a key two-run double in a four-run fourth as the Tigers topped Chicago 5-1 last night at Comerica Park. Detroit’s back-to-back wins gives the Tigers a 2-to-1 lead in the 4-game series which wraps up this afternoon.

Bonderman turned in perhaps his best start of the year to register his eighth win. He matched a season high in innings pitched and struck out eight, while allowing just one run on three hits and a walk.

The victory allowed the Tigers to get back to the .500 mark with a 70-and-70 record.

The loss dropped the second place White Sox to 5-and-a-half games behind the Central Division leading Twins. Detroit is 13-games back in third place. Rick Porcello starts for the Tigers this afternoon.

The Cubs were shutout last night at Wrigley Field, losing 4-to-0 to the Astros.
