CHICAGO, IL (WKZO) -- Intensive monitoring and screening for Asian Carp will begin this week in Northern Illinois, after more carp DNA turned up in tests near Chicago. The test results are generating new fears that the voracious invasive species may have gotten by the three electric barriers designed to keep them from getting into the Great Lakes.
Patty Birkholtz, the Director of Michigan’s Office of the Great Lakes says the old fish know better, but the young ones keep testing the barrier. She suspects some may have already made it through and they may have to implement a containment or eradication program to control them.
Fishing crews will spend 4 days this week, starting today in Lake Calumet, spreading nets, electro-fishing and using other techniques to see if they can find any Asian Carp beyond the barriers.
