Bubba Smith, the Michigan State standout and a two-time Pro Bowl selection as a defensive end in the NFL, passed away yesterday at the age of 66.
The 6-foot-7 Smith, who had a successful career as an actor after his retirement from the NFL, most notably in the “Police Academy” movie series, was found dead at his home near Los Angeles.
The cause of death is unknown. He was the top overall pick of the 1967 NFL draft by the Baltimore Colts and won a Super Bowl with that team in the 1970 season. He also played for the Oakland Raiders and Houston Oilers before retiring from the game after the 1976 season.
