LANSING, MI (Metro Source) - Governor Rick Snyder has signed the state's 46 billion-dollar budget for the fiscal year that begins October 1st. The Governor says this budget represents a break from the bad habits of the past, as it is the earliest point in at least three decades the budget has been complete, and eliminates Michigan's 1.5 billion-dollar deficit. Highlights include the addition of 255 million dollars to the Budget Stabilization Fund to account for unforeseen emergencies or declines in revenue. The budget also allocates 134 million dollars in grants to local governments for environmental cleanup and pollution prevention. Opponents of the bills criticized Snyder and Republican lawmakers for cutting education spending and forcing some retirees to pay taxes on their pensions for the first time.
