COLDWATER, MI (WTB) - In Branch County high school sports, in Friday night football, Coldwater falls on the road to Lakeview, Quincy beats an arch-rival with a big win at Jonesville, Union City again keeps the Little Brown Jug to stay undefeated, and Bronson gets blanked at Ft. Loramie, Ohio.

Coldwater is still searching for its first win of the season as the Cardinals last night lost their SMAC East matchup at Battle Creek Lakeview with the Spartans winning 20-to-8. Lakeview scored a touchdown in each of the first three quarters while Coldwater avoided the shutout by hitting paydirt with 3:34 left in the fourth quarter.   Brandon Vandenhout put six points on the board with his 15-yard touchdown run. Coldwater added a two-point conversion on a pass from Mitch Galloway to Jesse Johnson. Lakeview then recovered the Cardinal’s on-sides kick and the Spartans secured their second win of the season to improve to 2-and-3 and 2-and-1 in the SMAC East while the Cardinals slip to 0-and-5 and 0-and-3 in the division.

The McDonalds Player of the Game honor for Coldwater goes to the entire Cardinal’s defense for once again hanging in there while the offense continues to try and get ON track. Kody Heitz led Coldwater in rushing last night with 69 yards while Vandenhout had 47 yards along with his touchdown run. Cardinal quarterback Mitch Galloway completed 12 of 17 passes for 101 yards. Cody Waffle led the defense with 8 tackles.

Next week, Coldwater is on the road again with a game atMarshall.  

Elsewhere last night,Quincyrolled on the road with a 48-to-12 victory over arch-rival Jonesville. The visiting Orioles improve to 3-and-2 overall and 3-and-1 in the Big Eight.

Also in the Big Eight,Union Citystays undefeated while collecting its eleventh straight Little Brown Jug by winning 45-to-6 atAthens, keeping the host Indians winless on the season. The visiting Chargers, ranked eighth in the state in Division Seven, are now 5-and-0 and with their 4-and-0 conference record, in sole possession of first place in the league after previously unbeaten Springport lost at home toReading39-to-19. Next week, it’s homecoming forUnion Citywith the Chargers hosting Springport.

And Bronson lost last night atFort Loramie,Ohio41-to-0. It was the fourth straight shutout for the host Redskins, who improved to 4-and-1 while the visiting Vikings slipped to 2-and-3. Next Week, it’s homecoming for Bronson with the Vikings hosting Centreville.
