CALHOUN COUNTY (WTVB) - The case of a body discovered Sunday in Branch County is now a Calhoun County murder investigation with a suspect in custody. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says that after it was notified Monday that a body had been found in a wooded area off Ely Road in Butler Township, their detectives determined that a homicide may have been committed in Marengo Township.
The Calhoun County Major Crimes Task Force was activated and within two hours, they said a person of interest was located and arrested as a murder suspect. The 68-year old Marengo Township man was booked on a charge of open murder and is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
Authorities say the victim was a 63-year old man who resided both in Michigan and California. His name is being withheld until the next of kin is notified. An autopsy was performed Monday in Grand Rapids and although no information was released on how the man died, the peron who discovered the body while four-wheeling in the area with friends said it appeared the victim had been shot to death.
There’s no word yet from investigators on a possible motive for the homicide.
