LAWTON (WKZO) -- Welch’s Foods is reporting that 90% of their Concord and other juice grape crop in Berrien, Van Buren and Cass Counties for this year, were wiped out by Thursday night’s sub-freezing temperatures.
It was the combination of the warmer than normal March weather that tricked the plants into budding early, and the typical April hard freeze that took them out. A spokesman for the company says they get about 17% of their grapes from the vines in Southwest Michigan.
They are still assessing the damage to other crops, including the grape varieties grown for wine.
