BRONSON, MI (WTVB) - Criminal Charges have now been filed against a Bronson woman for the death of her infant daughter earlier this year. The Branch County Prosecutor’s office has charged 22-year-old Mariela Flores-Valle with felony murder and first degree child abuse. Autopsy results on the body of 5-month-old Diane Perez have identified blunt force trauma to the head as the cause of death. But they also found evidence of broken limbs and ribs that had occurred sometime before the fatal injuries. Flores-Valle turned herself in yesterday. Bond was denied at her arraignment and her next court date for a preliminary exam is scheduled for May 16th.
An ambulance was dispatched to her unit in the Brookfield Apartments complex on February 5th on reports of a child not breathing. The baby died the next day at Bronson’s Pediatric Trauma Unit in Kalamazoo and doctors were immediately suspicious.
An autopsy was ordered and it was the final results of that post-mortem that resulted in murder charges this week. Last week, Flores-Valle let the probate court take jurisdiction over her other three children, including a twin brother of the baby that died, rather than take the stand and testify about what happened to their sister.
