Justin Verlander struck out 14 over eight strong innings as the Tigers trounced the Yankees 7-to-2 in the opener of a four-game series last night at Comerica Park. Verlander improved to 12-and-7 with the 132-pitch performance. Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera hit solo homers for the Tigers, who have reeled off five straight wins and are now a season-high nine games over .500 at 59-and-50. The victory also kept Detroit a game and-a-half behind the Central Division leading White Sox, who rallied for a 4-to-2 win over the Royals in Chicago. And the Cubs dropped their sixth straight game, losing 2-to-0 at San Diego.
