MONTCALM COUNTY, MI (WTVB) - The first case of West Nile has been registered in West Michigan. A horse was diagnosed with the virus in Montcalm County. Late August and early September have typically been the worst season for the virus, because that’s when the breed of mosquito that carries it hatches.
There have already been several cases recorded in eastern Michigan, including two human cases but no fatalities. There have been some serious outbreaks along the gulf coast, and 16 have died in Texas already this year from West Nile. In the north, the drought has suppressed mosquito hatching.
