The Top Gun director, 68, apparently committed suicide on Sunday afternoon (19Aug12) by leaping from Vincent Thomas Bridge near Long Beach.

The horror happened in full view of local sailors and tourists on a harbour cruise, and some of them filmed and took photographs of the incident, according to TMZ.com.

One onlooker tells the website, ""He landed right next to our tour boat, and many of us saw the whole thing.""
