High School Basketball Season Begins


QUINCY,  MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, the boy’s basketball season tipped off last night with the Quincy Orioles in action at home against Hillsdale and in the game you heard here on the radio, the visiting Hornets used a dominant fourth quarter to run away from the Orioles with Hillsdale winning 47-to-29.

Quincy trailed 21-to-17 at the half and then both teams scored ten points in the third quarter. The Hornets ruled the final period when they outscored the Orioles 16-to-2. Hillsdale also used its height advantage to outrebound Quincy 43-to-25.

Jimmy King was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Quincy with a team-high 9 points. Ashton Diotte added 8 points and Michael Tesch had 7 rebounds.

Quincy’s next game is Thursday night at Addison. In last night’s junior varsity contest, Quincy beat Hillsdale in overtime 54-to-52.

In girl’s basketball last night, the schedule included a Branch County matchup with Bronson winning at home over Quincy 48-to-38.  Bronson was ahead 26-to-18 at halftime and stretched the lead to 40-to-27 after three quarters before closing out the ten point victory.

Kylei Ratkowski had a game-high 10 points for Bronson while Katie Santi led Quincy with 9 points. The Lady Vikings improved their record to 2-and-1 while Quincy slips to 0-and-2.

Bronson also won the j-v game 35-to-22. Alexa Ratkowski led the Lady Vikings with 8 points while Mikayla Sikorski added 6 points and 13 rebounds.

Kelsey Robinson had 12 steals to go along with her 4 points. Cailyn Hines had a game high 12 points for Quincy.

Union City fell at home to Mendon 45-to-14. Katie Birch had 6 points for Union City. Tonight’s schedule includes season openers in boy’s and girl’s basketball for Coldwater against Battle Creek Central with Coldwater on the road for the boy’s game while the Lady Cardinals under new head coach Ken Smoker will play at home.

We’ll have the boy’s action from Battle Creek on the radio with our live coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 beginning at seven o’clock. Bronson and Union City also have their season openers tonight in boy’s hoops. Bronson and new head coach Dennis Gest play at Homer while Union City and their new head coach Ben Chard start their schedule with a game at Colon.
