SCOTTS, MI (WKZO) -- Captain Drew Russell of Scotts was buried near Vicksburg last fall with full military honors, but the real reason for his death in Afghanistan was not being told.

The official story at the time was that he and another soldier had been killed by a rocket propelled grenade fired by Taliban insurgents.  

A subsequent investigation by the AP shows they were killed in a coordinated attack by Afghan soldiers they were training, and that while an RPG had been fired nearby, Russell was shot three times in the back.  

It’s what they now call a “green on blue” assault and its happened dozens of times since. The AP claims the military did not want it to be known that Afghan soldiers were turning on American trainers and killing them.

The investigation shows the three Afghans who conducted the attack were able to enter the compound without being checked and escaped unharmed because security was not geared to stop them.
