COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - The Winter Tax Bill sent out to all Coldwater Township tax payers on December First contained a clerical error for the Branch County 911 operations levy and the Jail-Law Enforcement millage. The 911 millage should have been one mill instead of three-quarters of a mill, or .75 as it appeared on the bill. The Jail millage should have been a half a mill, .50 mills instead of .4852. The Coldwater Township board at a special meeting today decided after consulting with the State of Michigan Treasury Department that the less confusing and least expensive way to handle this situation was to put the additional millage on the December 2013 Winter Tax Bill.
The Township would reimburse the County for the additional millage that should have been collected. The Township would then be reimbursed through the winter 2013 collection. An example of the additional millage that should have been collected on a property with a Cash Value of $50,000.00 amounts to an additional tax of $6.62. Again, instead of reprinting all of the tax bills and resending them, they felt this was the least costly solution to the taxpayer in this situation.
