CASWELL BILL Approved By State Senate

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Legislation sponsored by State Senator Bruce Caswell taking another swipe at driver responsibility fees was approved by the upper chamber this week. After last year eliminating some of the fees, the Senate has now given drivers the option of doing community service instead of paying them.

The bill sponsored by Caswell would allow those slapped with some of the "bad driver" fees before October First to do community service as an alternative to paying that fee or any unpaid portion of the fee.

Caswell said the bill, which passed 37-1, was good public policy. According to the Republican from Hillsdale, many of these people are poor and they don't have much money. Those violations would be for accumulating seven or more points on a driving record within a two-year period; driving without a valid license; or failing to produce proof of insurance.

The Secretary of State could not suspend an individual's driving privileges during the term of community service or while the person was pending entry into a community service program after properly applying for community service.
