BRONSON WINS CARDINAL CLASSIC WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, in wrestling, Coldwater hosted the Cardinal Classic on Saturday with a field of teams that included Bronson and Union City and the title went to the Bronson Vikings, who finished the day undefeated with a 5-and-0 record and a 51-to-28 victory over Hastings in the title match.

The host Cardinals and Union City both had 1-and-4 records on the day with the lone Coldwater victory coming over Union City 56-to-24. The Cardinals, who wound up in ninth place, were led by Mohammed Aljabaly, Kegan Brown, and Nooh Aljabaly, who each went 4-and-1. 

Union City’s victory was a 42-to-39 decision over Harper Creek.  The Chargers’ top performers with 4-and-1 marks were Tyler Howard, Taylor Howard and Jared Shepard.

No events are scheduled for today in Branch County high school sports.

Today on the Coach’s Corner, it’s Coldwater girl’s basketball coach Ken Smoker.

In middle school sports Saturday, in boy’s basketball, the Coldwater eighth grade “A” team topped Battle Creek Northwest 48-to-33 in the first round of the season ending tournament at Marshall.

Collin Warner led the Cardinals with 12 points while Zach Murphy added 11 points and Sam DeMeester had a team-high 9 rebounds.

Coldwater improved its record to 10-and-0. In the Battle Creek Lakeview “B” team tournament, the Coldwater 8th grade team beat Marshall 29-to-10 with 13 points for Caleb Letendre. Also on Saturday, the Bronson seventh grade team lost to Centreville 43-to-24 in the St. Joe County tournament with 8 points for Ethan Cossairt.
