FLINT (WKZO) -- All the school districts in Genesee County are starting their Christmas break two days early, not because they are imbued with the Holiday Spirit or infected by the flu bug. It’s because they are scared.

Threats from unknown sources about guns and bombs, the mood after Sandy Hook and rumors about the mayan prediction of the end of the world, all whipped into a froth by social media prompted the Superintendents to unanimously decide to start winter break two days early.

Jeriann Patterson is the Superintendent for Marlette Schools. She says they may have to make it up at the end of the year if the get enough snow days.

And it’s spreading. Because of the decision, four districts in neighboring Lapeer county have also canceled class today and tomorrow and locked down their schools.
