GRAND RAPIDS (WKZO) -- An 8-year-old girl from Detroit is dead and several other members of her family, who were visiting west Michigan as part of a church group, are injured because of a drunk driver.
Grand Rapids police Sgt. John Dorer says a Ford Explorer ran a red light at Buchanan and Hall, and struck the white Toyota with the 6 members of the family broadside. It happened early Sunday afternoon.
Two occupants in the SUV then fled the scene on foot, with witnesses in pursuit, who were able to flag down police.
The two who fled are in custody. The driver was not only drunk but didn’t have a valid license. The passenger was also wanted on an outstanding warrant. They are expected to be arraigned today.
The 8-year-old was dead at the scene. A 4 and 10-year-old siblings remain hospitalized. Everyone else was treated and released.
