Coldwater, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports, girls and boys basketball fans will congregate in Coldwater again this afternoon and tonight for day two of the Fourth Annual Cardinal Holiday Hoops Tournament, which wraps up with a total of eight more varsity and j-v contests following yesterday’s first round games.

We had Thursday’s Coldwater varsity action on the radio and we’ll carry those games again today with the host Lady Cardinals competing for the tournament title while the Coldwater boys team plays a consolation game. The girl’s championship matchup will feature Coldwater against Williamston. The Lady Cardinals advanced by holding on to beat Fremont, Indiana 43-to-40. Coldwater led 24-to-15 at halftime but had to turn back a rally by the Eagles before securing the victory to improve their record to 3-and-4. Kenzie Galloway was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater with a game-high 17 points along with six rebounds. Jordan Shiery had a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with her six points.

The Coldwater-Williamston championship contest is scheduled to tip-off this afternoon at 5 p.m. Williamston yesterday defeated Niles 44-to-27. The Coldwater girl’s j-v team yesterday lost to Fremont 45-to-36 and will take on Niles in a consolation contest today at 1:30 when the second day of the tournament gets underway. All of the varsity games are at the new C-H-S gym with the j-v action in the old gymnasium. The Coldwater boy’s varsity team last night lost to Morenci 53-to-47. There were seven lead changes and 4 ties in the game that saw Morenci ahead 20-to-19 at halftime before the Bulldogs took charge in the third quarter when they outscored the Cardinals 17-to-12 on their way to a 6-point victory. Coldwater starting center Luke Stempien, who had six points, was our McDonald’s Player of the Game. Jordan Eddy had a game high 20 points for the Cardinals. Coldwater’s record dips to 2-and-4 while it was Morenci’s first win in six games. The Bulldogs will play Fremont tonight for the championship after the Eagles yesterday defeated Eaton Rapids 78-to-65.
