Governor Snyder signs abortion legislation, vetoes other language

by
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder
Michigan Governor Rick Snyder

LANSING (WKZO) -- Governor Rick Snyder has signed into law legislation that will increase safety standards at abortion clinics.

Under the new measure, any facility that advertises abortion services and conducts more than 120 surgical abortions per year will need to become licensed freestanding surgical outpatient facilities approved by the state.  The bill also provides that waivers for those licenses may be granted to any facility already in operation that is determined by the state to be operating in the best interests of its patients.  The legislation further provides a measure that seeks to ensure any woman seeking abortion services is not being coerced into the situation.

Snyder also vetoed a measure that he originally pushed for because he did not care for how it was written.  The bill would have shifted Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's standing as a charitable non-profit to become a customer-owned non-profit.  He did so because language was added to the legislation that would have required women to purchase elective abortion coverage without exclusions for cases of rape, incest, or the health of the mother

Snyder said in a statement released Friday that he doesn't believe it's "appropriate to tell a woman who becomes pregnant due to a rape that she needed to select elective insurance coverage."   He further adding that he felt that just the way the bill was written was an overreach of government into the private market.
