High School Sports: Tournaments Wrap Up

In Friday night high school sports, the 4th Annual Cardinal Holiday Hoops tournament wrapped up at Coldwater High School:

Williamston 44, Coldwater 22: In varsity action, Coldwater’s girls team was unsuccessful in their attempt to defend their tournament title from last year, as they fell to the Williamston Hornets 44-22. Williamston used stifling man-to-man defense to hold the Lady Cardinals to single-digit scores in every quarter, while forcing 28 Coldwater turnovers. The Hornets held Kenzie Galloway, Coldwater’s leading scorer, without a point last night. Meghan Schorfhaar led the Cards with 6 points and 5 rebounds, while our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Shelby Bowers, had 4 points and 3 boards. Coldwater drops to 3-5 on the season.

Fremont 60, Morenci 48: Fremont was able to three-peat as boys varsity champions with a 60-48 win against Morenci. Tyler Jenkins led the Eagles with 28 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and 5 steals.

Coldwater 66, Eaton Rapids 62: The Cardinal boys varsity was able to bounce back from Thursday’s upset loss to Morenci with a 66-62 win against Eaton Rapids. Four Coldwater players scored in double figures, led by Jordan Eddy’s 14 points. Grant Maurer had 13 despite going 1/7 at the free throw line. Luke Stempien had 12, as did our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Ryan Hadley. The Cardinals improve to 3-4 overall with the win.

Fremont 43, Niles 30: In the girls varsity consolation game, Fremont bounced back from a 3-point loss to Coldwater on Thursday to beat Niles 43-30.

Coldwater won the boys JV championship, leading wire-to-wire to claim a 53-38 win over Eaton Rapids. Nate Waterbury led all scorers with 18 points, while Blaze Watson added 16 as the Cardinal JVs improve to 5-2. Coldwater also took the JV girls consolation game with a 45-29 win against Niles behind 15 points from Morgan Howard. Williamston also won the JV girls title by beating Fremont 53-29, and in the boys JV consolation game, Fremont prevailed over Morenci 62-37.

Bronson traveled to Kalamazoo Christian for the final day of the A&K Enterprises Holiday Tournament, and in the consolation round, the Viking boys lost to the host Comets 58-19 to drop to 1-6. Blake Fox, Mark Robinson, and Eric Toledo had 4 points apiece. Bronson’s girls, meanwhile, won their consolation round game over Sturgis 45-38 behind 12 point from Skyler Sobeski and 11 point from Kylei Ratkowski. The Lady Vikes improve to 5-4.

On today’s light schedule, in wrestling, Coldwater is at the Mustang Dual Meet Tournament at Portage Central, while Bronson travels to the Goodrich Tournament of Champions.
