Michigan and Kalamazoo officials say flu bug can be a killer

UNDATED (WKZO)-- It’s been widely reported that a 6-month-old from Kalamazoo has died from the flu, as the annual season for the virus is off to a fast and virulent start.

Michigan Health Department Spokesperson Angela Minicuci says there have been 8-flu pediatric deaths nationwide, which is also a concern at this stage in the season. She says the flu vaccine can’t be administered to infants under 6 months, so it’s important that everyone in that household receive a flu shot to keep the virus away from the baby.

It’s mostly the very young, the very old and people with congenital health issues already who make up the 30-thousand or so who die every year from complications caused by flu.

That's many times the number of people who die from West Nile every year or died from the recent outbreak of fungal meningitis caused by contaminated steroid shots.

According to Linda Vail, Director of the Kalamazoo County Department of Health and Human Services,  they are the patients that develop the complications that prove fatal, and when they can, they are the ones who have the most to gain from a vaccination.
