LANSING, MI (WTVB) - For some in the state, it can be seen as a good news/bad news situation. Up to five months of federally funded unemployment benefits are no longer available now that Michigan's jobless numbers are below a level that triggers the extra benefits.
Michigan fell below the required level a week ago today and that will impact almost 30-thousand unemployed workers in the state. There is a three week phase-out period after which no further extended benefits payments can be made. That puts the end of the payments at February 18th.
The program provides up to 20 weeks of unemployment pay to those who exhaust their state and Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits.
