COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - In Branch County high school sports last night, in varsity girl’s basketball, in the Big Eight, Quincy lost at Reading 62-to-53. Sarah Ward had a double-double for Quincy with 16 points and ten rebounds while Katie Santi had 11 points and Regen Stahl ten. Quincy slips to 1-and-11 in the conference and 1-and-15 overall.
And Union City fell at home to Springport 48-to-28. The host Lady Chargers led 10-to-9 at the end of the opening period but the Spartans ruled the rest of the way, holding Union City to single digit scoring in each of the final three quarters. Andrea Carls had ten points for Union City, which drops to 4-and-14 overall and 0-and-13 in league play. Springport also won the j-v game 34-to-26. Riley Smith had 10 points for Union City.
Last night in reserve boy’s and girl’s hoops, it was a sweep for Battle Creek Lakeview over Coldwater. In the boy’s action at Lakeview, the host Spartans won the j-v game 41-to-38. Lucas Stempien had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Coldwater. The visiting Cardinals dropped the freshman contest 57-to-42. Michael Magocs had a game-high 24 points for Coldwater, including 6 triples, and added 12 rebounds.
In the girl’s game at Coldwater, the Spartans took the j-v contest 27-to-13. Michaela Gillette had 6 points and 6 rebounds for Coldwater. And Lakeview won the freshman game 26-to-20. Mackenzie McGuire and Shelby Bowers had 6 points apiece for Coldwater.
Also last night in j-v girl’s action, Bronson lost at Mendon 40-to-12 with 6 points for Kinslea Blouin and 11 rebounds for Makayla Sikorski.
Turning to tonight’s varsity boy’s and girl’s basketball schedule, Coldwater plays at home against Battle Creek Lakeview and it will be “Back to the Eighties” night for Cardinal fans attending the doubleheader which we’ll have on the radio on AM 1590 and the new FM 95.5 WTVB with our live coverage beginning right around 5:30 following the Evening Journal.
The girl’s game starts at 5:45 with the boy’s scheduled to begin at 7:15. We’ll have also audio coverage of the games streaming on-line at wtvbam.com. Also in boy’s and girl’s hoops, Bronson hosts Mendon, while in boy’s action only, Quincy hosts Concord, it’s Union City at Homer, and Tekonsha is at Litchfield.
In gymnastics, from Wednesday night, Coldwater traveled to Adrian for a Southern Gymnastics conference meet against the host Maples and Saline. Coldwater finished third behind runner up Adrian and first place Saline. Coldwater opened the competition on the vault and six of the seven Lady Cardinals earned qualifying scores on the event, led by junior Kylie Dudek. She was the first competitor of the night and held onto first place with a score of 9.05. Danielle Fenske, Camila Perez, Becca Harmon, and Darby Kahler each put up numbers in the 8's to earn individual qualifiers. Sierra Crist put in her first performance since being sidelined for two weeks with an injury and came through with an 8.4, a score that is very consistent with her marks before the injury.
Next on the uneven bars, Ellie Ohm and Dudek were Coldwater's only qualifiers on the bars with Dudek placing second with her 8.7 mark. On the floor exercise, Dudek posted an 8.775, which placed 3rd on the event while Fenske earned her third individual qualifying score.
Coldwater was the final team to compete on the balance beam and they had two stuck performances and three individual qualifying scores. Fenske earned her third in a row. Sierra Crist nailed her routine while Dudek suffered two falls with an 8.4.
In the all-around, Dudek placed 2nd with 34.925 points. Coldwater is looking forward to hosting Adrian and Plymouth tomorrow for their first annual Cardinal Invitational. The meet is dedicated to cancer awareness and there are many activities planned as the gymnasts "Stick It for a Cure". A silent auction of over 80 items begins at 11:30 and there is a raffle for a Kitchen Aid mixer and Kindle Fire at the end of the meet. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the CHC Foundation to benefit the local oncology center.

In middle school sports, in girl’s basketball, Bronson won a pair of games at home over White Pigeon. The Lady Vikings won the eighth grade contest 22-to-16 with 7 points for Kirin Cekander. And Bronson took the seventh grade game 24-to-16 with 8 points for Jill Pyles and 6 steals for Carly Kyle.
