UNDATED (WKZO) -- A few weeks ago it looked like the Michigan Primary was going to be an afterthought. Now it’s a wide open race again. Rick Santorum was talking earlier this week about finally knocking Newt Gingrich out of the race, but the latest polls suggest he could do real damage to Romney in Michigan.
An American Research Group Poll shows Santorum a 6 point lead over Romney in Michigan, 33% to 27%, and Public Policy Polling, gives Santorum a 15-point lead, 39 to 24%. Pew Research says Romney and Santorum are statistically even nationally, on popularity and electability. All three polls show Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul well behind and fading.
Political Analyst Bill Ballenger says Michigan is a must win for Romney. He thinks Santorum is doing so well here because he is doing well nationally and they haven’t done much in Michigan yet. That could all change today when the Romney campaign will begin running ads, more than likely targeting Santorum.
The two front runners in the Republican race will make appearances in Michigan this week. Mitt Romney is scheduled to be at a furniture outlet called Compatico on 44th Street in Grand Rapids tomorrow afternoon at 5:30. Rick Santorum will address the Detroit Economic Club on Thursday, and then Keynote Oakland County’s Lincoln Day Dinner.
